BENJI ONE LUNG

SHATTERED

2023

This EP - all of six tracks - took around two years from start to finish, working around and taking inspiration from everything from sickness to a baby (and a dose of laziness). I think it was worth it.

When I was younger, I used to wonder what I would write songs about when I wasn't a teenage loser, chasing girls around and knowing it all. It turns out, life's pretty rich after your twenties, too.

BACK TOGETHER PROPERLY

2020

It turns out that all it takes for me to write and record a new EP after eight years is a global pandemic. Back Together Properly is the first time that I’ve taken on every step from writing, to recording, to mastering, and I’m super happy with the result. And, it means I get to be a man in his mid-thirties who’s still able to sit in the box room making music.

ALWAYS CHOOSE IN PERSON

2012

This is probably just me, but in Always Choose In Person I can hear the love that went into it. It felt like it was the perfect combination of having figured out songs that worked on a writing level, with the right people to help make it, with having a great time actually committing them to a recording.

BEN DIES AT THE END

2011

This EP always feels transitional, in a good way. I wanted to get a good record of these songs (three new and a very worthwhile re-recording of a fourth), since at the time, I’d started writing tracks for what would become Always Choose In Person and I didn’t want these to get lost in time. Ben Dies At The End feels to me like a solidifying of ideas following the album before.

TOO MUCH LIKE A PERSON

2010

This album was a lot of fun to write and record. I think it was the first time in the studio that we’d set out to be ‘over-creative’, to make something that deliberately explored some weirder places. It was also fun to get a few more friends in to record, including my dad.

BENJI ONE LUNG

2010

This was my first solo recording, written and recorded in the wake of the band wrapping up. At the time it was an unusual way to make music and although I can hear an element of me figuring things out, it still holds a nice place in my heart.
